Fraser Island is definitely only suited for high clearance 4×4 vehicles. Ensure you carry appropriate recovery gear and prepare yourself for quite an adventure.
Vehicles with low clearance or towing and also all wheel drive vehicles have a good possibility of getting stuck and will have a difficult time clearing the tracks.
Always drive to the conditions. National Parks publishes a fortnightly conditions report with up to date information on track and beach conditions as well as track conditions, park alerts and campsite availability. K’gari (Fraser Island) conditions report
If you are considering exploring Fraser island please make sure that you have enough experience in off-road driving conditions, especially soft sand driving.
Dry conditions on Fraser Island and the amount of vehicles driving on the inland tracks make driving conditions really difficult. The sand on the inland tracks can be very thick and powdery and the he amount of tour operated buses do not help either. The buses often get stuck and make it almost impossible for 4X4 vehicles to pass.
Accident Fraser Island

One of our vehicles was involved in an accident in 2013. It was driven by a female driver who lost control on one of the inland tracks close to King Fisher Bay. The car smashed into a tree and was badly damaged.
Bottom line, please make sure that you have the necessary 4X4 driving skills for the conditions on Fraser Island. If its very dry stay away from the inland tracks until conditions get better.
